Hasan Jilaihawi
NYU Langone Medical Center USA
Details
Within his practice, Dr Hasan Jilaihawi implements innovative technologies in order to offer the least invasive and most effective therapies, without the need for open-heart surgery. These technologies include coronary stenting by the wrist artery, also known as the radial approach, and beating-heart valve replacement and repair, known as transcatheter valve therapy, which can be conducted through the femoral artery or a vein in the leg. These treatments do not require a large incision in the chest.
He is a pioneer of transcatheter valve therapies of the aortic valve. In 2007, he performed the United Kingdom's first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure. He has since performed more than 1,000 TAVR procedures worldwide and, through his ongoing support of international colleagues, has helped plan several-fold more.
For the past 10 years, one of his research areas has been the use of advanced imaging to optimize cardiac procedures, including TAVR. Resultant findings have dramatically improved the safety of such procedures, with the worldwide implementation of his TAVR surgical planning methodologies corresponding to a substantial increase in survival rates.
