Dr. Alan Chan obtained the medical degree from the University of Hong Kong in 2002. After completing the internship, he worked in Queen Elizabeth Hospital HKSAR as a resident and obtained MRCP(UK) in 2005. Dr. Kwok has been appointed Director of the Cardiology Center and the Cardiac Catheterization & Intervention Center at the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital since 2004. He is currently Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong and the Department of Medicine & Therapeutics, Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has been conferred Honorary Professorship by Beijing Hospital, Ministry of Health, PR China since 2013. He has served as Honorary Consultant at the Hong Kong University-Shenzhen Hospital from 2014-16.
Dr. Kwok graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong with the R.M. Gibson gold medal in 1991. He received his Cardiology training at Grantham Hospital. He then underwent advanced training in Interventional Cardiology at Brigham & Women's Hospital/Harvard
Medical School in 1998, under the Hong Kong Heart Foundation Fellowship award program.
His research interest includes new-device interventions, vascular brachytherapy, drug-eluting stents, stent design, bioresorbable vascular scaffold and structural heart disease interventions. He authored and co-authored over 75 scientific publications, book chapters and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals, which included Circulation, JACC and JAMA.
Dr. Kwok has actively participated in virtually all major live case conferences in the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region as international faculty, case operator and speaker for over ten years. He has been invited faculty member of TCT (Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics), the world-largest interventional cardiology live demonstration conference, since 2002. He has won over 15 challenging case awards and Best abstract awards in international and local live case conferences, which included tough cases in chronic total occlusion and complex adult congenital heart disease interventions.
Dr. Kwok serves on the Asian Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology as an advisory board member. He pioneered the use of a number of novel devices in Hong Kong and China. He has been principal investigator in several first-in-human studies. Prof. Jeffrey Popma (Harvard Medical School) and Dr. Kwok implanted the first drug-eluting stent in Hong Kong in 2002. Dr. Kwok implanted the first commercially available Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold in Hong Kong in 2012 and the first Magnesium Bioresorbable Scaffold in Asia-Pacific region in 2016.
